AMaViS
Though named "A Mail Virus Scanner" AMaVis is not exactly a scanner itself but more a framework to plug a mailserver, one (or more) anti virus scanners and even a spam filter together. Highly recommended (just in case you're asking: I use AMaViS with Postfix, F-Prot and Clamav).

F-Prot Antivirus
A very nice command line anti virus scanner, seems to update signatures pretty often. The Linux version is free for home users and integrates nicely with amavis.

GnuPG
"GnuPG is a complete and free replacement for PGP. Because it does not use the patented IDEA algorithm, it can be used without any restrictions. GnuPG is a RFC2440 (OpenPGP) compliant application." Again, a *must have*. Integrates nicely with various mailers (I use "Sylpheed").

GPGShell
Windows user / former PGP users might love this little app: "GPGshell is a graphical interface for GnuPG (GNU Privacy Guard). It requires an already working installation of GnuPG [...], because it does not have any cryptographic code itself.". In combination with GnuPG this makes a perfect replacement for the commercial PGP version.

Passwordsafe
"Password Safe is a tool that allows you to have a different password for all the different programs and websites that you deal with, without actually having to remember all those usernames and passwords. Originally created by Bruce Schneier's Counterpane Labs, Password Safe has opened it's source, and development and maintenance has been handed off to Jim Russell."
